0

Welcome to episode 24 of the Passive Income Musician Podcast! Membership sites are a fantastic business model for musicians wanting to make an income teaching music online. One of the main benefits is the re-occurring revenue, meaning the sale isn’t one-off like a singular course or eBook sale. Our guest, Tim Topham, is an expert when it comes to membership sites and he shares his most valuable advice.

One problem that you are likely aware of if you consider yourself a freelance musician, is the fact that you don’t have a consistent salary. You are always fighting those empty spaces in your calendar.

Unfortunately, even if you’ve built an online audience of music students and have products to sell, that problem doesn’t completely go away.

While the powers of passive income will trickle in, you will still need to continually launch new products to grow your revenue. You may have months of income that are quite inconsistent with each other.

The membership site model is a big help with that. Of course, no model will ever cure the problem completely, but it will provide a level of consistency a launch based model cannot.

Our special guest Tim Topham is an expert at the music membership model. He has a membership site for piano teachers, to help them become better teachers and to learn how to grow their piano studios. It’s a massive success, and he’s been able to build a team to help grow and scale his business.

He shares how his membership site works, tools he uses, how he markets it, and some of his best tips for crushing it with a music membership.

In this episode:

1. How Tim Topham started his blog.

2. How Tim had a successful first-course launch with a 1-2k mailing list.

3. Why Tim switched from one-off course launches to a membership site.

4. What Tim’s membership site offers and what makes a good membership site.

5. How Tim adds new value for his members and reduces “churn rate.”

6. Some cons of running a music membership site.

Big thanks to Tim Topham for laying down a ton of value today. I learned a lot from him about music membership sites and I’m sure you did too.

Membership sites may be one of the least passive revenue streams available to musicians, but it’s one of the most powerful.
